The Young Mother

Since she had that baby,

she looks 5 years older.

5 months has passed,

but she has aged a lot since then.

Now she looks tired, desperately tired,

where tiredness becomes normal,

unnoticed,

part of life.

Freshness is forgotten and she struggles on,

waking in the middle of the night,

waking up early,

and all the time feeling unprepared.

The baby came too early.

So did he.

A child has a baby of her own,

and the baby is brought up by someone who hasn’t yet grown up.

We are all so often raised by people who are not yet settled,

not yet comfortable,

not yet at ease with themselves or with life,

and so we are a generation of tenseness,

balls of fear running into each other,

f***ing,

and carrying on,

just like our parents.
